Hometown: Raleigh, North Carolina
Educational background: Graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor’s in Social Work and a minor in Biology from North Carolina State University
Host Site: Florida Department of Health Nassau County, Healthy Start program
What is your title and role at your host site?
I am serving as a care coordinator. Healthy Start receives screens from doctors for pregnant women and infants, and I will be doing initial contacts with them to talk about their risks and see if they would like ongoing services. We then provide education and support to them in an effort to reduce infant mortality. I will also be doing tasks for the Infant Mortality Task Force in Nassau and providing breastfeeding support and education to our clients.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I joined this program because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after college. I have a passion for serving people, and I thought that AmeriCorps would provide a wonderful opportunity to do just that while allowing me to learn valuable professional skills and figure out what field I wanted to work in in the future.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am hoping to gain professional skills such as networking and public speaking as well as grow personally. I also hope that by being in this position and having the opportunity to see and experience so many different aspects of public health and social work, I will have a better idea of what type of career I want to pursue.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I am hoping to get a job in public health or social work after I finish my AmeriCorps year. I would also like to go to grad school within the next few years. I really like the Jacksonville area and could see myself staying and working here for a while.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
To be honest, I have no idea! I am very much a “go with the flow” kind of person, so my best answer is that I’ll end up where I end up. I know I want to get a Master’s degree, but I haven’t decided what kind. I’ve been tossing around the idea of getting an MPH or even becoming a midwife, but I try not to restrict myself to only one idea about what my future might hold.
