Educational Background

Why did you join NHC?
I joined NHC because it is a unique opportunity that allows me to gain experience in the field of public health, professional development skills,  networking connections, working with peers, clients, and co-workers from a variety of backgrounds. I wanted to join a community with the goal to serve others and be a part of something bigger than myself!

What are your plans after NHC?
I would like to pursue a Master of Public Health degree or attend an accelerated nursing program, maybe even both!

What sparked your interest in community service?
As a child my parents always encouraged my brothers and I to serve others in all we do as shown through their commitment to serve their community and family daily. Service has been one of my strongest values and has influenced almost all of my decisions in life. Growing up I was always doing service projects with my Girl Scout troop, sports team, church, and school. It wasn't until high school when I went on a service trip to Haiti that I realized how issues such as poverty, malnourishment and health disparities truly affected communities, especially children. This experience taught me important life lessons such as humility, understanding my privileges, and the willingness to learn from those I serve and serve with and has motivated me to seek out opportunities to serve others in any capacity I can.

What excites you the most about serving in Philadelphia?
One thing I am most excited about serving in Philadelphia is the chance to be surrounded by so much diversity and learning different languages and cultures. In my service site, I have the opportunity to work with patients from all over the world and hear their life story and how the ended up in Philadelphia. The second exciting part of serving in Philadelphia is the variety of service activities from working with children an hour week on learning to read, painting murals, serving at Grace Cafe or even volunteering at the Zoo during October for Boo at the Zoo! It is always a learning experience that connects you with past and present AmeriCorps members, community members, and make new friends!
