Why did you join NHC?
For my gap year, I wanted the opportunity to give back to my local community through an immersive service program. NHC provides the opportunity to make a direct impact on my community while allowing me to explore my passions for equal access to care and public health initiatives in a unique and meaningful way.
What are your plans after NHC?
After my year in service, I am planning on attending medical school and incorporating public health concepts into my role as a physician.
What sparked your interest in community service?
While shadowing a physician, I observed as some patients turned down needed care due to the inability to afford various treatments and operations. I learned that achieving "good health" and quality care requires overcoming countless barriers that uniquely present themselves to each individual. By involving myself in service opportunities, I can help individuals overcome these barriers and move towards their goals. My love of community service has since grown through its ability to spark growth and appreciation both within me and those that I have served.
What excites you the most about serving in Philadelphia?
Having grown up an hour outside of the city, I have always considered Philadelphia to be my home. This year in service will allow me to fully immerse myself in the community and to explore all the different opportunities and cultures that Philly has to offer.
